True Love

In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

Movie Review: Divergent

Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet
Directed by:  Neil Burger

BLURB: In a world divided by factions based on virtues, Tris learns she's Divergent and won't fit in. When she discovers a plot to destroy Divergents, Tris and the mysterious Four must find out what makes Divergents dangerous before it's too late.

REVIEW: Divergent is based on a book by the same name that is part of a series written by Veronica Roth. Picture a world in the not to distant future where everything is broken down into nice neat sections of people or “factions” by the traits that they possess and the virtues that they live by. Everyone has been placed in a tight little box by the government right where they want them, and can watch them. In the vein of 1984 and the Hunger Games, Divergent is a story about a world where people are used as puppets and pawns, controlled relentlessly by the government they live under. And if you don’t conform to what the government says…well you will be taken care of. While it is reminiscent of those two famous books and their movie counterparts it is also very different and unique enough to pull you into it’s own dynamic.

In Divergent the people are divided into five different factions. Each one based on a sole virtue – Abnegation is selfless, Amity is peaceful, Candor is honest, Dauntless is brave, and Erudite is intelligent. When a person reaches 16 years of age they are required to take an aptitude test that determines what faction they are best matched with. They can accept the results and become a member of that faction that the test suggests or they can go with their own feelings and wants and choose another faction that they will then align themselves with. However once a person chooses the faction they want to live under they are that faction until you die – it can not be changed. As they say in the film faction over blood. Once your faction is chosen you stay with that faction - not with your former faction (including your family) if you choose a faction different than you grew up in.

Beatrice Prior was born into the Abnegation faction. Abnegation is also the head of the government and her father is one of the ruling council members. However Beatrice has always admired the Dauntless people for their bravery and the exciting and action packed way they seem to live their lives. It is so very different than the quiet and selfless existence she has always lived under.

When Beatrice takes the aptitude test she unexpectedly shows attributes that are consistent with not just one faction but with several which labels her as a Divergent. Beatrice is very lucky in that the woman giving the aptitude test recognizes this and falsifies her test results and warns Beatrice to NEVER tell anyone not even her family about her true results or it would have dire consequences.

At the time of the ceremony where all eligible young people choose their factions to live under Beatrice just can’t help the pull and desire that she has to live a life of action and adventure and she to the shock of all chooses Dauntless. Little did she dream just how different and hard her choice would be as she is literally thrown into a whole other life in her new faction where toughness, fighting skills, and courage rule. She takes on the new name of Tris and works relentlessly to become a true member of her new faction. Making friends and enemies along the way.

She is drawn to the mysterious and aloof Four who is one of the predominant members of Dauntless and helps whip the new recruits into true Dauntless material.

But the fact that she is Divergent and her unusual attributes because of that soon start to threaten to show themselves putting her and possibly all those she loves in danger. Can Tris grab ahold of her new way of life? Could her feelings for Four be real or is he playing her? And above all can Tris hide what she truly is and does she really even want to?

I won’t say anything more as I do not want to give away any spoilers for those who haven’t seen the film yet. But I really enjoyed this one. It has tons of action and adventure, there is romance, and drama too so there is something for everyone. It is also a  timely tale of governments and control that is resonating with so many now a days. I think that is one reason of the huge popularity of both this series and that of the Hunger Games. We should always be vigilant not to let our freedoms be taken from us under the guise of safety. If you conform you will never be truly free.

Rated PG-13 for intense violence and action, thematic elements and some sensuality

This one is PG-13 there is some kissing and suggested intimacy but nothing graphic as far as sexual situations. It got the PG-13 rating mostly for the violence and action sequences. Teens should be fine with this one.
