True Love

In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

1 John 4:9

Book Review: Emerald Embrace by Shannon Drake

BLURB: After a friend’s untimely death arouses suspicion of murder, Martise St. James journeys to the brooding Scottish castle of the late Mrs. Creegan to find her mystifying widower. Lord Bruce Creegan’s presence arouses more than just her suspicions. Surrounded by fear, temptation, and uncertainty, Martise tries to unlock the mystery of the ancient castle and locate a missing emerald. But when the Lord’s stormy eyes and charm melt her resolve, Martise struggles to destroy the shadow of her doubts in flames of reckless passion.

REVIEW: Emerald Embrace is a novel filled with many twists and turns, passion, and danger…if you are a fan of mysteries with your romance you will love this one! The year is 1865 and Martise St. James is on a mission that takes her from war torn Virginia to Scotland in search of the truth behind a dear friend’s untimely death and the treasure of a rare emerald that could save her family home.
Castle Creeghan is a place filled with mystery, whispers, and danger. When Martise arrives she is struck not only by the haunting atmosphere but by the handsome Lord Creeghan himself. Many rumors and stories abound of the danger that lurks at Creeghan but Martise is determined to find out just what was the true cause of her friend Mary “Lady Creeghan” death. Every question seems to bring about only more questions and while she expected secrets and maybe even danger, - she never expected to be so drawn to the master of the castle with his eyes of fire and the desire that threatens to sweep her away. But while she is drawn to him like a moth to a flame she is also suspicious of what he is hiding behind his dark persona. Could he have been the true cause of his wife’s death? Is he hiding the emerald or does he even know of its existence? Or is there darker forces than either of them imagine at play in the castle? Martise walks a tight rope that could cost her own life. Will she find the answers to her questions and her hearts desires along the way? Or will the darkness that lurks in the shadows claim her as well?
I don’t want to say too much about this one for fear that I might give some important things away, but this is a good gothic style romance. (This is actually a re-release of the novel…it was first released in 1991) For those of you that love a good dose of mystery and who done it in your romances you will definitely love this one! I’m a big fan of Shannon Drake but I have to say this isn’t my favorite of her books. While it was a good read there just seemed to be something missing for me, I can’t quite put my finger on what it was, but it did seem to lack some of the fine points that are in many of her other books like the Graham & No Other Series. I enjoyed the story but some parts seemed a bit more rushed while others were drawn out a bit more than I thought necessary. I did enjoy that this title was illustrated throughout. The artist is Yevgeniya Yeretskaya. It adds a nice touch and accompaniment to the story. I would love to see more novels with illustrations!
