Book Review: Everlasting by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss

BLURB: Historical romance was born when the remarkable Kathleen E. Woodiwiss gifted the world with her groundbreaking love story, The Flame and the Flower. Now, twelve consecutive New York Times bestsellers later, "the first lady of the genre" (Publishers Weekly) returns with her most breathtaking masterwork to date-a glorious celebration of a secret love that is dangerous, irresistible, forbidden, and . . .

Once, Abrielle's name was on the lips of every unwed nobleman in London as a proud exceptional lady coveted for her bearing, her breeding, her wit, and her beauty.

But when her stepfather-respected for his courage and valor during the Crusades-is denied his rightful title and the wealth that accompanies it, Abrielle finds herself suddenly disgraced, no longer a suitable match for any proper gentleman. Only one would still have her, though he desires no more than physical pleasure: the oafish and grotesque Desmond de Marl‚. His dark and scandalous reputation is legend, and Abrielle has heard rumors that his first two wives perished by his hand. Yet no one else can rescue her once-proud family's honor and keep her stepfather from debtor's prison, so she is left with no choice but to accept the cruel and hateful de Marl‚'s offer of marriage and sacrifice her virtue to a scoundrel she fears and detests . . . even as she yearns for another lover.

Dashing, handsome, tall, and kind-a black-haired Scotsman with vivid blue eyes-Raven Seabern is an emissary for his king, and quite unlike any man Abrielle has ever encountered. From the very first moment their eyes meet, he intrigues and mesmerizes her-and dancing in hisarms at a royal banquet leaves her weak with the desire to surrender. But their love can never be, for Abrielle is betrothed to a monster. And the well-being of everyone she cares for demands that she honor her promise. Still, the fire lit that night will not be doused. Raven knows he has found the true one and must never let her go-though secrets, deceptions, dishonor, and unimaginable peril will surely be their fate if they follow the dictates of their hearts.

REVIEW: This wonderful book was the last from the lady (and I mean that in the highest regard of the word) of Romance herself Kathleen E. Woodiwiss. Some consider Woodiwiss the mother of the modern day romantic novel genre. And when reading her books it is easy to see why. A masterful storyteller who will be remembered and sorely missed as this year saw her passing in early July from cancer. Her publisher said "Everlasting is Kathleen's final gift to her fans," And for that reason alone this is one to remember and cherish.
Abrielle is a beautiful strong and the object of pursuit by countless noblemen. But when a cruel twist of fate lands her and her family at the door of ruination financially, it seems the only choice left to her is to marry an odious and grotesque blaggard who's fortune could save her family's good name.

And yet from the moment her eyes meet those of a braw and handsome Scotsmen named Raven Seaburn her rebellious heart yearns for something that can never be. Raven Seaburn knew from the moment he saw her that he would do all within his power to make her his for all time. But how can he have her when it seems she is already promised to another. Will fate allow them a path to each other's arms or will it drive a wedge so firmly between them that it can have no hope of ever being breeched.

Everlasting is a wonderful historical with memorable characters and a plot that will have you guessing to the end.

Book Review: Highland Surrender by Dawn Halliday

Book 2 in the Highlander Series

BLURB: From the author of "wickedly erotic romance" (Monica McCarty) comes the tale of a Highland lass and an earl with dark desires.

Determined to put his roguish past behind him, the Earl of Camdonn arranges to marry the proper Lady Elizabeth. But when an accident lands the Earl in the expert hands of a beautiful Highland medicine woman, all well-laid plans are thrown to the wind- and, just as in the old days, his passions run high...

Ceana MacNab has terrible luck with men. Resigning herself to the healing arts, she has steeled her heart against love. Then fate sends Cam her way. Even though he's a well-bred Earl-and Ceana a low-born Highlander-their all-consuming passion may lead the way to lasting bliss.

Highland Surrender is the second book by Ms. Halliday in her Highland series. Those of you that read her first book Highland Obsession will recognize Cam The Earl of Camdonn from it. (Now I hasten to say that I did not get a chance to read Highland Obsession before diving into this one but it did not hurt the story at all it was fine as a stand alone. I had no trouble at all following along with the story and what a story it is!)

The Earl of Camdonn is determined that he has turned from his reckless and wicked ways and he has vowed that he will be the kind of Laird that his people need and that will make them proud! He has traveled to England and procured for himself the perfect wife. And it would seem that he has found just that in the very well connected Lady Elizabeth Grant the well bred and genteel daughter of a Duke. The match being blessed and recommended by both the Duke of Argyle and the King as well, Cam is positive he has found the perfect bride with whom to rule his lands and beget his rightful heir! But on the way back to the Highlands he and his party are set upon by highwaymen and Cam trying to lead the bandits away from the other coach carrying his betrothed Lady Elizabeth leads the bandits indeed from them, but he is shot and gravely wounded in the process.

It seems that fate has other plans for him though when he is found by Ceana MacNab the Highland healer of the Glen. Ceana nurses Cam back to health but soon passionate feelings start to grow between the beautiful healer and the wounded Earl. But Cam is betrothed to Elizabeth and even though his body burns for Ceana he tries desperately to subdue his feelings and to do the right thing. But can true passion and could it be even more possibly love? Truly be denied even for what seems to be all the right reasons.

There are many layers to this wonderful tale including much more to Lady Elizabeth and her past that meet the eye. Then there is the mysterious and deadly curse that lies upon all the MacNab women (including Ceana) saying that no MacNab woman can ever marry. Plus an evil Duke, another sexy kilted male suitor that wants one of the women for his own and much, much more! This one has it all!!!! And don’t forget it has so much heat coming from the pages that I was lucky my sleeves didn’t catch on fire! ;)

I was totally enthralled by this story from the very start and I read it in no time flat because I simply couldn’t put it down. This is the first novel that I have read of Dawn Halliday’s but I am now in search of getting my hands on her other books as well! She is an absolutely joy to read! She pulls you into the story and doesn’t let go sending you along with the characters through intrigue, scandal, passion, danger and will leave you breathless! You feel as if you know the people intimately that your reading about and by the time your done you are left wanting more and sorry to see the book end. It is a true gift when an author can do that and Ms Halliday certainly has! I can’t wait to see more from this new author she has proved herself to me with this engrossing tale! I can easily see her name being up there with the likes of Moning, Howell, and Ranney in no time with books like these.

*Dawn Halliday is a pen name for author Jennifer Haymore*

Book Review: A Season of Seduction by Jennifer Haymore

Book 3 in the James Series

BLURB: Although the widowed Lady Rebecca has sworn off marriage, men are another matter. London’s cold winter nights have her dreaming of warmer pursuits-like finding a lover to satisfy her hungry heart. Someone handsome, discreet, and most importantly as uninterested in marriage as she is. Someone like Jack Fulton

A known adventurer and playboy, Jack seems like the perfect choice. There’s just one problem: Jack isn’t interested in an affair. He needs the beautiful, mysterious Lady Rebecca to be his wife. And he doesn’t have much time to persuade her. A secret from Jack’s past is about to surface, and by Christmas Day he’ll be either married to Rebecca or dead.

REVIEW: Jennifer Haymore’s A Season of Seduction is book three in her series surrounding the Duke of Calton and his very eclectic family. Now although this is the third book in the series I want to make sure that I say I had not read the other books before it…and I still had no trouble at all following the storyline. Nor did it detract from it at all - which is always a major plus. (It did however wet my appetite for the previous books. I have to find out what happened in them! And now I must go and get the other books in this fabulous series! Want to know why read on…)

Lady Rebecca Fisk has been very unlucky in love indeed. She is lonely and longs to feel the passion again. But being a widow and her first husband being a scoundrel of epic proportions - she has decided that the best way for her to get on with her life is to take a lover secretly and remain safely single! But even the best laid plans can go hopelessly awry in life …

Enter the very handsome and adventurous Jack Fulton. He seems the perfect choice for a liaison as he is everything that any woman could possibly want – well traveled, charming, gorgeous, and most importantly as uninterested in marriage as she is! Or so he seemed…

There is much more to Jack Fulton than what meets the eye. In fact Jack isn’t interested in just an affair with the beautiful Lady Rebecca, he wants her to be his wife! Jack has a dark secret that he is hiding and if he doesn’t convince Rebecca to marry him before Christmas that secret could very well cost him his life.

Jack liked Rebecca from the start but with each new encounter he finds himself falling more deeply in love with her. What started out to be a match because of necessity has now turned into much, much more. Rebecca is the very thing that he wants the most in the world, and he will fight all obstacles to make sure that she remains his. But Jack is walking a very precarious tight rope- he cannot let Rebecca find out the truth behind his deception and his secret or he knows that everything will be over between them. And Jack is bound and determined that he will not let that happen.

Now I don’t want to risk giving anything away so I’m going to leave it there and if you want to find more out you will have to pick up a copy of this fantastic book. I completely enjoyed this one and as I said before it has made me rush out to buy the previous books in the series. Ms. Haymore has penned a fabulous story of seduction, romance, intrigue and betrayal and above all that – love. You don’t want to miss it! I’m now a big fan of this new author and she is going on my automatic to buy list! I love her writing style and the complex plots that she has weaved so beautifully together. Believe me some of them are very complex but thoroughly enjoyable. The characters are amazing and the story will tug at your heartstrings, believe me. So if you love a great read, do go and get this series…you will be glad that you did!

Book Review: Tortured by Amanda McIntyre

BLURB: Ensnared in the war-torn, untamed Dark Ages of North England, Sierra understands all too well what it takes to survive: the ability to numb the soul. She has learned this lesson the hard way, watching her mother die at the hands of the king's henchmen, her brother cast out into the cold to perish, and discovering the treacherous, leering king holds a crucial secret about her past.

But when he grants Sierra her life, she discovers the pardon is perhaps worse than death. Sierra is made executioner's apprentice, forced to witness unspeakable suffering while encouraged to explore her own sexual power.

Brainwashed and exhausted, Sierra's heart slowly grows cold—until Dryston of Hereford is brought to the dungeon as traitor and spy. Using her sexual allure to extract the warrior's secrets, Sierra finds herself torn between duty and desire. Soon, Sierra is craving the only man who can help set her battered soul free and give her a chance for revenge…

REVIEW: It is the Dark Ages - in the land of war torn Britannia the Saxon invaders have ravaged the land pillaging, raping, burning, killing, and enslaving those who were left in their wake of destruction. Sierra is one whose life was spared but death would have been much easier than what she now has to face.

The malicious Saxon King Aeglech has spared her life because of her gift of the “sight” that she inherited from her mother (who was forced to serve him before her). He is the one responsible for the murder of her family and for taking away all that was dear to her. Now as if to add insult to injury he has ordered her to be the apprentice to his head Executioner. Sierra is forced to witness, and assist in the heinous tortures inflicted upon the prisoners in Lord Aeglech’s dungeon. Growing up for nine years in this hellish existence Sierra soon looses herself and tries to become detached from the suffering and abominations around her. She finds some comfort in the arms of a young stable boy but the passion that she feels, even though it does allow her some stolen moments of escape from her accursed life, isn’t love. Sierra wonders if she will ever again feel like a human being and if there is any chance at hope left. But hope sometimes comes when we least expect it and for her it comes in the form of a new Roman prisoner that is brought to the dungeon to be tortured into giving up what information he has. In this strong and honorable man Sierra sees what she has been waiting for, a possible glimmer of freedom.

Dryston was part of the Roman army until he and his brother Torin decided to stay in Britannia and build an army from the native people. They want to fight the barbaric Saxons and once again to take back their land from the grips of the murderous invaders. When Dryston is captured by surprise in one of the villages and brought to the dungeons of Aeglech, he knows that he must escape and get word to his brother about the movements and numbers of the Saxons if their plans of attacking and crushing Aeglech’s armies are to succeed. When the sees Sierra he can hardly believe that she is to be his torturer but she tortures him in more ways than one. This passionate young woman offers him an alliance if he will help her escape. Together they devise a plan to get them both out of the clutches of this Saxon hell. But what starts out as just an alliance for survival soon starts to become much more. Could Dryston be her savior in more ways than one…could he be the savior of her soul and heart as well?

This is a book that has very complex characters and layers to it and I think you will enjoy each one. Ms. McIntyre has made a strong and yet emotionally fragile heroine in Sierra. Her relationship with Dryston is one that at first was all about survival but quickly became much more. I found this read to be both very intriguing, and passionate as well as very deep. I think she has captured the essence of this violent and dark time in history very well and posed some very good interpretations of how those who lived through them might have felt and how they survived.

Though it is not your typical romance by any means I think that is what makes it so special. Its gritty and passionate uniqueness is one that touches the heart. I loved the complex relationship between Sierra and Dryston and seeing it evolve from one of dependence on the other to escape and survive then watching it change and soften Sierra and give her back herself. That was nothing short of inspiring (And it made me cry more than once lol)! I thoroughly enjoyed this one and I hated to see it come to an end. I can’t wait to read more from Ms. McIntyre, she truly has a unique and powerful voice. And though this was the first book I have read of hers it will definitely not be the last!

Book Review: Tails of Love by Lori Foster, Sue Ellen Welfonder, Sarah McCarty and More

BLURB: From seeing-eye dogs to cats who sit in your lap, animals are there for us in more way than we can count. Helping us get through the day with a wag of the tail and a tilt of the head, they let us know that someone is on our side-no matter what. They also have an uncanny ability to break down barriers between people, bringing families and loved ones closer, and giving strangers an excuse to strike up conversation. In Tails of Love, each writer draws from her own unique perspective on our loyal friends--exploring the many mysterious ways they bring love into our lives.

REVIEW: Tails of love is a wonderful collection of 10 heartwarming original stories about our beloved animal friends by bestselling and award-winning authors - Lori Foster, Stella Cameron, Kate Angell, Dianne Castell, Anne Christopher, Marcia James, Donna MacMeans, Sarah McCarty, Patricia Sargeant, & Sue Ellen Welfonder.

Not only will you get some great reads with this one, but all of the Author and Agent proceeds from sales of the book will benefit the AAF - Animal Adoption Foundation - a no-kill animal shelter in Hamilton, Ohio! So it is for a great cause as well.

Each author has penned a unique and touching portrait of just how much animals truly bring to our lives. They give not only un-conditional love but laughter, joy, and sometimes they can even be the thing that saves our own lives. Animals have always held a very special place in my own heart (I’m the proud owner myself of three beautiful and feisty kitties) and I thoroughly enjoyed this book all the stories were good but a few even brought me to tears. The wonderful animals in these stories run the gambit from playful and loveable dogs and cats, to a monkey and a petting zoo with a very mischievous little goat! And every story is rich with love and romance as well so what more could you ask for?

If you are a pet owner or just an animal lover who also loves romances you definitely do not want to miss this wonderful book and again remember the proceeds go to a wonderful shelter that values every life that comes through its doors. I truly wish every shelter was a non kill shelter. Unfortunately that’s not the case and this book also brings awareness as to how each of us can make a difference in helping animals in our own community and shelters. I highly recommend this great anthology.

Book Review: The Courtesan's Daughter by Claudia Dain

Book 1 in the Courtesan Series

BLURB: Young Lady Caroline's prospects for a suitable match are severely limited by her mother's infamous past. Before Lady Sophia Dalby entered London society, she was a highly desired courtesan. What man of title, position, and wealth would marry a courtesan's daughter?

Sophia's solution is to purchase a husband for Caroline-the Earl of Ashdon-agreeing to settle his gambling debts if he will take her daughter's hand.

Insulted, Caroline refuses to have a husband who was bought for her. But after meeting the fiery Lord Ashdon, she wonders if it wouldn't be satisfying to have him pay for her, perhaps with a priceless pearl necklace? With Sophia pulling the strings, Lord Ashdon may get more than he bargained for and Caroline may get just what she wants.

REVIEW: The series starter is about a famous courtesan who uses her famous wiles and wit in playing matchmaker for her innocent and sheltered daughter Caroline. Oddly enough this was the first book I have actually gotten to read by Miss Dain, but I can assure you it will not be the last. This book was wonderful! It has such great dialogue and play between all of the main characters and even the several of the secondary characters were very interesting (I hope we see more of them in the next one). I absolutely loved it from start to finish and read it in no time; once I started it I just couldn't stop reading. I honestly haven't had this much fun with a romance in a VERY long time.

I really love Sophia the seasoned courtesan, she is so feisty and fun it's easy to see why she was the toast of London. And when Sophia snags the handsome and enigmatic Lord Ashdon for her daughter's soon to be husband the sparks really begin to fly. Ashdon is the son of a spurned ex-lover of Sophia's who is bent on using his son as a tool of revenge against Sophia for their troubled past. And Ashdon has been told in no uncertain terms to ruin the young Caroline and by thus doing to hurt the mother through the child.

However from the moment that they meet Ash and Caro cannot deny that they are pulled toward one another by not only shared desire but could it be the very real start of love crackling in the air between them? I simply cannot wait for the second book in this series! Don't miss this fresh and extremely fun romp through romantic London it is as Sophia would say "Simply to delicious to miss!"
