True Love

In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

Book Review: The Ranger by Monica McCarty

Book 3 in the Highland Guard Series

BLURB: Embedded deep behind enemy lines, Arthur “Ranger” Campbell is Bruce’s secret weapon as he wages his final assault on the enemies who stand against him. Recruited to join the Bruce’s secret elite fighting force for his prized scouting skills, Arthur’s razor sharp senses and ability to blend into the shadows make him the perfect spy. But when this shadow warrior must infiltrate the clan of the chieftain who murdered his father, his heart is locked on revenge. Inside he faces unexpected resistance from the sweetest of obstacles—a honey-haired siren who is his enemy’s daughter. But the vivacious, enchanting Anna MacDougall is a woman whose skill at uncovering deception rivals his own.

Intrigued by this ruggedly handsome newcomer to her father’s forces, Anna accepts the challenge his determined indifference to her arouses. Though anxious for the war to end and yearning for a quiet life with a good man to love, Anna is drawn to this mysterious knight whose eyes devour her but whose words push her away. But as danger, treachery, and the threat of looming war draw them closer into each other’s passions and secrets, a warrior made of steel must make a choice from the heart: love or revenge.

REVIEW: Book 3 of the Highland Guard series is the story of  Arthur “Ranger” Campbell. (Who you will have met briefly before if you read the first two books in the series The Chief and The Hawk). Arthur’s specialty comes from the fact that he has heightened senses...almost a sixth sense (that he refers to as feelings) about danger or when something is up or about to happen. A fact that has saved not only Arthurs life but many other's lives as well over the years. Arthur will need to rely on every one of those “feelings” he gets when Robert the Bruce sends him into his enemy John of Lorn’s domain as a spy. While Arthur is on his mission he becomes captivated by the beautiful and sassy Anna MacDougall…however all is not dreamy kisses and roses... in fact things couldn't be much more complicated or stacked against Arthur and Anna. For even though they are both desperately attracted to each other - they are on opposite sides of the war and even more damning to the relationship unbeknownst to Anna her Father murdered Arthur’s Father years ago in cold blood (which Arthur witnessed as a young boy). A fact that Arthur has been longing to avenge since it happened.

Knowing that Anna’s Father killed his Father understandably weighs extremely heavily on Arthur, so he fights both his growing feelings for her as well as her constant attempts to get closer to him. But it seems to be a loosing battle as no matter how hard he tries he can’t seem to keep the feisty Anna from getting in his blood. Will it be possible for Arthur and Anna to overcome all the odds stacked against them so that they can be together? Or will the war that rages around them claim them both before they even get a chance to find out?

The Ranger is packed full of tense action and adventure as well as a very hot and complex romance just like the previous books in the series. I loved it and found it very difficult to put down! This one had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see how everything would go down with so much at stake for all the characters in this one. Monica McCarty has a knack for writing very intricate characters and story lines that pull you right into the story and don’t let go. That to me is the mark of a truly great author. You feel by the end of the book as if you have not only had an enjoyable read but that you have met new friends that you can’t wait to see more of in later books as well.

Just like The Chief and The Hawk before it as soon as I finished The Ranger I put it on my keeper shelf and was chomping at the bit to start on the next book in the series. I think that pretty much says it all right there. Bravo again Mrs. McCarty and on to book 4!!!
